What are the stages of kidney transplant

Facing a kidney transplant can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to walk this journey alone. As one of the most reliable and successful medical procedures today, a transplant offers renewed energy, independence, and freedom from dialysis. Take each stage one step at a time with your care team, your family, and our community behind you. Note: The Liver Hope Foundation is not a medical provider. Always consult your specialized transplant care team for medical guidance.

Stage 1: Referral and evaluation

Your journey begins when your nephrologist refers you to an accredited transplant center. This referral can occur even before starting dialysis once your kidney function declines significantly. During evaluation, a multidisciplinary team conducts comprehensive testing, assesses cardiac and physical wellness, and verifies emotional readiness to ensure that surgery is safe and that you have a supportive care network in place.

Stage 2: The waitlist and living donation

Once approved, you are registered on the national transplant waiting list. Because deceased-donor waiting periods can take several years, exploring living kidney donation with a loved one, friend, or altruistic donor can dramatically reduce wait times and improve long-term outcomes. Family involvement during this stage is essential for maintaining wellness, organizing logistics, and providing mutual emotional strength.

Stage 3: Surgery and post-transplant recovery

Transplant surgery generally takes 3 to 4 hours. Your native kidneys typically stay in place, while the donor kidney is placed in your lower abdomen. Following roughly a week of hospital care, you will begin life with daily anti-rejection medications and routine laboratory monitoring. Most individuals return to work, hobbies, and everyday activities within a few months, stepping forward into a healthier and fuller life.
