Understanding primary sclerosing cholangitis

Gain insight into primary sclerosing cholangitis and discover how The Liver Hope Foundation provides support and resources to those affected.

What is primary sclerosing cholangitis?

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare, chronic liver disease. It causes the bile ducts, both inside and outside the liver, to become inflamed, scarred, and narrowed over time. Bile, which is vital for digestion, cannot flow properly when the ducts are damaged. This leads to a buildup that can harm the liver.

Over time, PSC can result in infections, liver scarring (cirrhosis), liver failure, and an increased risk of bile duct cancer. Many people may not show symptoms initially, making early monitoring and medical care crucial for managing complications.
