Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

A Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) is a routine blood test that gives a broad snapshot of how your body is functioning. It measures 14 substances, including blood sugar, electrolytes that help manage fluid balance, calcium, albumin and total protein, kidney markers such as BUN and creatinine, and liver-related measures including ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin.

For liver health, a CMP can reveal patterns that may lead a clinician to look more closely at liver injury, bile flow, or how well the liver is making proteins and clearing bilirubin. It also measures related factors, including blood sugar and kidney function, that can be important for people living with liver disease. A CMP is a valuable screening and monitoring tool, but it cannot diagnose a liver condition on its own. Your healthcare professional will interpret the complete panel alongside your symptoms, health history, medicines, and any additional testing that may be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Who may need a CMP? A healthcare professional may order this test during a routine check-up or when someone has ongoing fatigue, nausea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain or swelling, dark urine, unexplained appetite changes, or other symptoms that could relate to liver, kidney, or metabolic concerns. It is also commonly used to monitor liver disease, diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, abnormal lab results, or medicines that may affect the liver or kidneys.

How do I prepare? The Liver Hope Foundation does not order, schedule, or perform CMP testing. Your qualified clinician or laboratory will arrange the order, appointment, blood collection, and interpretation. Follow their directions closely. Fasting for several hours may be needed when a CMP is ordered with other tests, but it is not always required. Ask whether you should take your usual medications, vitamins, and supplements before the blood draw. Do not stop prescribed medication unless your clinician tells you to.

What should I do with my results? Review the entire panel with the healthcare professional who ordered it. Bring a copy of your results, note your symptoms and questions, and ask how your results compare with prior tests. Your care team can determine whether repeat testing, lifestyle support, a referral, or further evaluation is appropriate. The Liver Hope Foundation offers plain-language education and support resources, but we do not diagnose conditions or replace clinical care.
